December
10, 2001: Today is the 31st anniversary of the publication of the first
issue of Rail Travel News,
which was
then called "Rail Travel Newsletter".
Three of five teenagers walking on the tracks in Morrisville PA on Dec
9 died when struck by a Washington-
bound Acela
Express train at about 3:45pm. The location is about 25 miles NE of Philadelphia.
This would
appear to
be the first pedestrian fatalities involving the Acela trains. NE Corridor
service was disrupted.
Acela Express service is expected to reach the one-millionth passenger
point in December. Service began
on Dec. 11, 2000.
Amtrak's 2002 wall calendar is now available from the rail corporation.
The calendar photo is of an Acela
Express train
with power car 2002. Single copies of the calendar cost $6 and can be ordered
from Amtrak's
Web site,
at www.amtrak.com.
